After Decades of Interregnum, Ondo Government to Appoint Justices of the Peace (JP)*
The Ondo State Government has finalised plans to appoint the title of Justices of the Peace (JP) among qualified individuals across the state.
This initiative follows the approval earlier this year by Governor Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for the selection and appointment of qualified individuals to hold the office pursuant to Section 12 (f) of the Magistrates’ Courts Law of Ondo State, Cap. 90.
Dr Olukayode Ajulo, OON, SAN, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ondo State, noted that this approval marks the end of an interregnum lasting more than a decade.
This initiative is part of Governor Aiyedatiwa's efforts to strengthen grassroots justice and reinforce the rule of law throughout the state.
The Attorney General mentioned that applicants for offices have been screened, and those who met the required qualifications have been shortlisted and submitted to the Governor for final approval.
He emphasised that the individuals nominated represent various sectors of society, including traditional leaders, religious figures, public servants, law enforcement personnel, academics, and other reputable individuals.
Dr Ajulo outlined some criteria for candidate selection, which include good moral character, a legal age of fifty years, citizenship or legal residency within the jurisdiction, and a clean legal record, among other qualifications.
The functions of Justices of the Peace, which may differ from State to State, typically include the power to preserve the peace, to suppress riots and disperse all disorderly gatherings, authorising search and arrest warrants, conducting preliminary hearings for criminal cases, and presiding over minor civil matters.
They also handle minor offences, traffic violations, and specific small claims or property disputes, as well as considering bail applications, administrative and ceremonial duties, and administering oaths and affirmations.
Additional responsibilities include taking sworn statements from public office candidates, witnessing the signing of affidavits, statutory declarations, and other legal documents.
Governor Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa will officially confer the honour upon successful candidates from the three senatorial districts at the International Event Centre, the DOME, Akure.
