PROOF OF COMPETENCE AND EVIDENCE OF OWNERSHIP BY MISSIONS ARE SACROSANCT IN TAKING OVER SCHOOLS; AGAGU INSISTS.
A delegation of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Igbobini Diocese, recently paid a courtesy call on the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Ondo State, Olufemi Agagu FNIVS, in his office in Akure.
The delegation led by the Archbishop of Igbobini Diocese, Most Rev. Olugbenga Fafeyiwa, was at the office of the Commissioner to seek government's understanding on return of schools to the Methodist Church.
Most Rev.Fafeyiwa told the Commissioner that the delegation was in his office to seek the state government's nod in taking over Methodist Grammar School, Okitipupa.
He hinted that enrollment into the school has dropped considerably over the years while the school land was being encroached by some ambitious developers.
Responding, Mr. Agagu told the delegation that any mission that intends to take-over any school must provide evidence of ownership and proof of competence, while all stakeholders, including the host community must consent to it.
He explained that the quest by government to find a better way of funding education and ensure standard in the system necessitated the decision to hand over schools originally owned by missions to their owners, who must have the interest and competence in running such schools.
"It is glaring that there have not been much significant progress over the decade in terms of infrastructural facilities in our public schools compared to what it was in the 60s. Government cannot fold it's hands and allow the situation to degenerate further, hence the need to engage all the critical stakeholders in sector"
The Commissioner added that government would not hand-over more than two schools to any mission that fulfills all the requirements, while the process of handing-over would be gradual.
He added that the interest of every segment of the society; be it religion, ethnic, language or cultural background will being taken care of in the memorandum of understanding MOU, between the state government and the mission.
Mr Agagu who said government is worried by the spate of encroachment on school lands across the state, tasked the Methodist Church Diocese to work with the host community and other stakeholders to secure the school land
