The Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Olufemi Agagu FNIVS, says the introduction of vocational skill acquisition programme  in secondary schools in Ondo State under the Multi Skill Teenpreneurship Programme will redefine the prospect of education in the State.

The programme, facilitated by Accent Entrepreneurship Development Initiative and Spring Board Nigeria, was aimed at equipping secondary school students with multiple entrepreneurial skills for greater employability opportunities and self-reliance while undergoing their normal academic programmes.

It also aimed at encouraging an entrepreneurial mindset among the students and equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to start their own businesses and as well preparing them for the workforce and enhancing their employability prospects. 

The vocational skills acquisition programme was in partnership with LEND-A-HAND-INDIA (LAHI), a multi- Skill Foundation based in India, with the pilot project kick-starting in nine selected secondary schools across the three senatorial districts of Ondo State.

The pilot project of the Programme, facilitated by the  Chief Executive Officer of Multi Skill Teenpreneurship Programme, MSTP, Mr. Wale Akinyanmi has kicked off in the state with the distribution and installation of a multi millionaire equipment/tools in nine selected secondary schools the state.

LAHI, in conjunction with MSTP has also brought in its Technicians from India to set up the equipment/tools in designated workshops in the nine selected schools and as well trained local handlers and instructors for the Programme.

After training local handlers and instructors for more than one week, and having successful installed a total of 635 tools/equipment in each of the workshops, they were in the office of the Commissioner to tell him that it was time for them to go back to their country, India.

Addressing the LAHA and MSPT officials, the Commissioner expressed the gratitude of the state government for their efforts at adding value to Education in the state through acquisition of skills to prepare the students for future employment and self sustainability.

He said, choosing Nigeria and particularly, Ondo State for the pilot project in Africa, would go down in history and the state would forever remains grateful to LAHI and the Chief Executive Officer of MSTP, Mr. Wale Akinyanmi who facilitated the programme.

"Our desire is that the Programme will be implemented in all our secondary schools across the state and every student has the opportunity to go through the vocational skill acquisition programme. By doing this, Ondo State will be producing a new generation of entrepreneurs"

The Commissioner thanked  the organization, LAHI, for making Ondo State its priority, not only in Nigeria but in Africa, and assured that government would do all it could to protect the equipment/tools, ensure the judicious utilization and mentainance, stressing that the future of the programme is paramount to the state government.

The leader of the delegate, who spoke on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer of Lend-A-Hand India, LAHI. Mrs Sunanda Mane, told the Commissioner that the team was impressed by the cooperation and enthusiasm of stakeholders in all the schools visited during the installation of the workshops.

He assured that LAHI would continue to monitor the Programme and carry out weekly evaluation for one year to know possible areas of intervention and ensure that its objective is achieved, adding that the desire of the organization was to ensure that every student in the state benefitted from the vocational training Programme.

The facilitator of the programme and Chief Executive Officer of Multi Skill Teenpreneurship Programme, MSTP, Mr. Wale Akinyanmi  urged government and other stakeholders to assume ownership of the programme and ensure its success, stressing that only through this, the future of the programme could be guaranteed.

Mr. Akinyanmi, said the success of the pilot project relies strongly on assuming ownership of the programme, collaboration and partnership with various stakeholders including government, educational institutions, community leaders, Alumni Associations, Non-governmental organizations, Parents/Teachers Associations, students, among others.

The pilot project spread across both public and private secondary schools in the state with the following schools being the beneficiaries;
Saint Louis Secondary School, Akure;
Springtide College, Igbatoro;
Anglican Grammar School, Igbara-Oke;
Independent Grammar School, Ondo; Manuwa Memorial Grammar School, Iju-Odo;
Oyenusi Memorial Grammar School, Ode-Irele;
Gboluji Grammar School, Oke-Igbo;
Imade College, Owo; and
Greater Tomorrow Secondary School Arigidi, Akoko.
