We will partner relevant agencies to eradicate child labour and provide quality education for our children - Ondo Commissioner, Akindolire

                        


The Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Laolu Akindolire has assured that state government would partner relevant agencies and organizations within and outside the country towards eradicating poverty and child labour among school age children in the state.

                               




The Commissioner gave the assurance while receiving in his office in Akure, a delegate of the ILO Action Against Child Labour in Agriculture in West Africa.

The International Labour Organization, ILO Action Against Child Labour in Agriculture is a Non-governmental organization working against child labour in agriculture and Supporting the ECOWAS regional plan of eliminating child labour in agriculture in West Africa.

The Commissioner assured the delegate that the Ondo State government was working towards ensuring that every child of school age, has access to quality education in all parts of the state, adding that none of them would be left on the streets or allowed to be as helping hands in the farm without acquiring basic education.

Mr. Akindolire who noted that the essence of education is to eradicate poverty, realize oneself and grow to be of great service to others, said the state government would continue to provide the needed facilities and infrastructure in schools to encourage the young minds and give them the best they deserved.

He said the state government would prioritize skill acquisition in schools across the state as part of strategy towards empowering the students with relevant skills that can take them out of poverty, make them self-reliant and employers of labour.

The Project Director of ILO Action Against Child Labour in Agriculture in West Africa, Dr. Agatha Kolawole who said the organization has worked in about 90 communities in Ondo State noted that child labour in agriculture was more prevalent in the rural areas and implored the state government to prioritize posting teachers to rural areas, especially as it prepares to recruit more teachers.

Dr Kolawole said the ILO Action Against Child Labour in Agriculture has been promoting poverty eradication and quality education among school-age children in Africa in partnership with other relevant organizations.

While expressing satisfaction with the efforts of the state government towards providing affordable education for the people of the state, Dr. Kolawole also expressed the readiness of her organization to partner the Ondo State Government towards eradicating child labour among children and giving them hope through quality education.
