ONDO GOVT PARTNERS PROFESSIONAL BODIES TO RESTRAIN BUILDING COLLAPSE*
The Ondo State Government has indicated its readiness to partner with organizations, relevant professional bodies and other stakeholders to regulate construction of buildings in the state with a view to preventing incessant collapse being experienced in other states of the federation.
The state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Hon. Gbenga Olaniyi, stated this while playing host to the Executives of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Ondo State chapter, during a courtesy call on him in his office in Akure.
The Commissioner while noting the rising cases of building collapse across the country, affirmed that Governor Ayedatiwa led administration would leave no stone unturned to guide against disaster of building collapse in the state.
Hon. Olaniyi enjoined the leadership and members of the Institute to continue to partner with his Ministry to achieve success in its mandate of ensuring physical and urban development of towns and cities in the state in line with the urban renewal agenda of the present administration.
While calling on the institute to checkmate quacks and guide against cutting corners among its members, the Commissioner assured them that the Ministry would continue to exploit the expertise of its members in regulating the activities of building contractors to achieve building specifications in line with best global practices.
Earlier, the Chairman of the State Chapter of the Institute, Architect Adetunji Bello had told the Commissioner that the body was ready to synergize with the Ministry of Physical and Urban Planning Development to prevent lapses that could cause disaster of building collapse in the state.
Arch. Bello, who decried construction of buildings without escape outlets in case of any unforseen eventuality, said the Institute is now giving registration number to its members to eliminate quacks an unprofessional practices among them.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Chief Bunmi Alade, commended the collaboration between members of the Institute and the Ministry in regulating the activities of building contractors and issuance of approval for construction of buildings in the state.
Chief Alade solicited for greater cooperation of the institute, particularly with the newly created Building Control Department in the ministry which is charged with the mandate of monitoring and enforcing that all building constructions follow approved specifications right from the foundation till completion.
