Ondo State Government commends Federal Government's efforts at improving nutritional status of citizens.
The Ondo State Government has commended the Federal Government's initiative aimed at addressing food insecurity and nutritional status of its citizens across the nation.
The State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Lola Fagbemi, said no government would be happy seeing it's citizens malnourished or die of hunger, hence the aptness of the Federal Government's initiative, especially at this critical period.
The Commissioner, while receiving a team from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in her office in Akure said the challenges of food security in Nigeria were enormous, and enjoined all and sundry to embark on house gardening so as to stamp out hunger in our homes.
She called for urgent and genuine collaborative efforts among stakeholders to invest massively in the agriculture sector to address food shortages and forestall imminent famine in the country.
Mrs Fagbemi expressed concern over the decline in farming activities which used to be the primary occupation of Nigerians, and advocated a return to farm as a way of tackling hunger and overcoming food insecurity in Nigeria.
While identifying insecurity across the country as a significant obstacle to food security, the Commissioner called for proactive security measures to enable farmers return to farm.
"Food is indispensable for survival," and without adequate security measures and incentives to enable farmers return to farm and shore-up production, the nation could face severe starvation."
The Commissioner praised the initiative of the Federal Government but emphasized the need for extensive public sensitization to ensure the success of the project.
According to her, the state Governor, Lucky Ayedatiwa, has initiated several measures to ensure security in our farms and to also encourage farmers to boost production so as to tackle hunger and rising cost of food items headlong.
The leader of the team, Mr. Bulama Dauda, explained that the mission of the team in the state was to intimate the Commissioner and her team on the urgent need to monitor food security and nutritional status in Ondo State.
Mr Dauda noted that the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is already partnering with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and other stakeholders to involve all states in the Federal Government's Initiative.
