Model Secondary School, Akure wins 10th edition of NILDS's National Quiz Competition*
Model Secondary School, Akure has emerged the winner of the 2026 edition of the National Quiz Competition organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS, for secondary schools in Ondo State
The quiz competition which focused on the Legislature, democracy and governance, was aimed at providing continued education on the legislature and broadening the knowledge of students and youths on democratic governance in Nigeria.
Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun in his speech at the occasion lauded the organizer, the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS, an organ of the National Assembly, for initiating the programme for organizing the competition.
Prof. Ajibefun, noted that the competition was aimed at acquainting school children with legislative procedures to enable them engage in meaningful discussions especially on issues that border on democratic governance as it affects the nation and their communities.
The Commissioner observed that democratic participation remains the fundamental pillar of good governance and therefore, the young ones need to get acquanted with the process and procedure as early as possible, adding that the competition would stimulate students' interest in politics and make them more proactive in matters relating to legislation and democracy.
Prof. Ajibefun noted that since democracy is rooted on the principle of participation and informed decision-making, the citizens need to be knowledgeable about their rights and procedure of governance to enable them make informed decisions that can shape the future of the country.
According him, the competition provides the avenue for the school children to broaden their knowledge on legislative procedures and prepare their minds on democratic governance, since they are the future leaders of the country.
He expressed optimism that the quiz competition, apart from being an academic exercise, would also provide a broad-based platform to teach the school children some values such as tolerance, humility, hard-work, team spirits as well as sharp analytical minds.
The Director-General of NILDS, Prof. Abubakar Olanrewaju Suleiman, represented by Mrs. Titilayo Olakumbi, explained that the quiz competition's goal is to inspire young Nigerians to cultivate an interest in legislative governance.
He stated that as a critical organ of the nation's democracy, the institute will not only enhance the knowledge of young Nigerians in legislation but will foster inclusive and participatory legislature in Nigeria and as well aserve as an avenue for citizen engagement in the legislative processes.
Prof Suilema further explained that the first edition of the quiz competition was held in 2016 with schools from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and was later expanded to include all 36 states of the federation.
He urged the participating schools and their teachers to abide by the rules and regulations to ensure that the competition achieves it's desired objective.
Following a three-round competition, Model Secondary School, Akure, emerged the winner and will represent the state at the zonal level.
