Ondo SUBEB Lauds Impact of Jolly Phonics Programme on Literacy Development in primary schools‎

The Chairman, Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Rt. Hon. Victor Olabimtan, has expressed satisfaction with the positive impact of the Jolly Phonics programme on literacy development in public primary schools across the state, following a recent monitoring exercise on spelling and pronunciation activities.

‎During the monitoring exercise, the Chairman observed that the programme has significantly strengthened pupils’ foundational literacy skills, particularly in reading, spelling and pronunciation.

‎He noted that the improvement recorded is evident, and reflects the effectiveness of the phonics-based teaching approach on the pupil.

‎Rt. Hon. Olabimtan stated that pupils now demonstrate a better understanding of letter sounds and word formation, compared to the period before the introduction of Jolly Phonics programme.

‎He explained that many pupils are able to identify letter sounds correctly, blend words, and spell with greater ease, noting that the interactive nature of the Jolly Phonics methodology has made learning more engaging and enjoyable for young learners.

‎This, according to him has increased pupils’ attentiveness, participation, and overall comprehension during lessons.

‎The SUBEB Chairman reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to strengthening the initiative by ensuring its sustainably and expansion.

‎He disclosed that SUBEB would continue to organize regular training and retraining programmes for teachers, provide relevant instructional materials, and intensify monitoring of the exercise across the state.

‎The Chairman commended teachers for their dedication and effective delivery of phonics lessons, noting that their commitment has played a major role in the success recorded so far.

‎He acknowledged their willingness to embrace innovative teaching methods aimed at improving learning outcomes.

‎Rt. Hon. Olabimtan also appreciated the contributions of development partners, particularly Jolly Phonics, for sponsoring and supporting the programme, and appealed to the organization to extend the programme to primary four, five and six, to further strengthen pupils’ literacy skills and enhance their global competitiveness.

‎The Chairman commended the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, for his consistent support for education, noting that the state government’s investment in programmes was a reflection its commitment to human capital development and quality education.

‎He therefore called on teachers, parents, and school administrators to continue supporting phonics-based learning both in schools and at home, stressing that literacy remains the foundation of all learning and must be given sustained attention.

‎Also, the Permanent Secretary of the Board, Mr. Adewale Omomowo, expressed appreciation to Jolly Phonics for its contributions to the education sector in Nigeria, particularly in Ondo State, describing the initiative as impactful and timely.

‎Similarly, the Director of Teachers’ Professional Development, Mrs. Comfort Monilari, noted that the programme has helped pupils to identify letter sounds, spell correctly, and pronounce words effectively, adding that these skills will significantly support their academic progress and overall learning development.
