ONDO STATE TO CREATE ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEPARTMENT IN THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION.

The Ondo State Government will create Entrepreneurship  Department in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, as part of efforts to enshrine skills acquisition and vocational training in secondary schools in the state.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Ondo State, Mr Laolu Akindolire, dropped the hint in his office while playing host to the facilitator of Multi-Skill Teenpreneurship Programme, MSTP, Mr Wale Akinyanmi and his team.

The team was at the office of the Commissioner to brief him on the progress and prospect of the Multi Skill Teenpreneurship Programme MSTP, a vocational skills acquisition programme currently being implemented in nine selected secondary schools across the three Senatorial Districts of the state.

The skill acquisition programme  was facilitated by the  Chief Executive Officer of MSTP, Mr. Wale Akinyanmi, in partnership with LEND-A-HAND-INDIA (LAHI), a multi- Skill Foundation based in India with the aim of equipping secondary school students with multiple entrepraeneurial skills for greater employability opportunities and self-reliance while undergoing their normal academic programmes

The Commissioner while lauding the initiative of the facilitator, said it was high time government changed the mindset of the school children by equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge needed to start their own businesses and as well preparing them for the workforce and enhancing their employability prospects.

Mr. Akindolire said the new department to be created in the ministry would focus mainly on skill acquisition and vocational training for school children in the state, adding that the state government was ready to partner any organization or body in that area.

He said a memo to that effect would soon be sent to Mr Governor for approval, and expressed hope that the state Governor, Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa has a burning passion for educational development of the state, especially pertaining to programmes that can help in decongesting the labour market by making the young minds self-reliant and employers of labour.

The Commissioner explained further that the state government through the new department would focus on provoking and reawakening the entrepreneural skills in the children early enough and ginger them to indulge in vocational activities while under-going their normal educational programmes.

"Our focus is to address the mindset of our children that education is more than just acquiring the paper qualifications alone. We want to give to them a holistic education that seeks to engage all aspects of the learner, including mind, body, and spirit, and providing for them the opportunity to explore and develop their unique interests, talents, strengths and skills. This will further shape their choice of career in life."

Mr. Akindolire said the desire of the government was to make vocational study and skills acquisition   integral part of the education system where every student would have the opportunity to go through the vocational skill acquisition programme, adding that by doing this, the state would be producing a new generation of entrepreneurs.

The facilitator of the programme and Chief Executive Officer of Multi Skill Teenpreneurship Programme, MSTP, Mr. Akinyanmi, said the success of the pilot project relies strongly on assuming ownership of the programme, collaboration and partnership with various stakeholders including government, educational institutions, community leaders, Alumni Associations, Non-governmental organizations, Parents/Teachers Associations, students, among others.

Mr. Akinyanmi who noted that the beneficiaries of the pilot project are doing well, appealed to the state government to facilitate the expansion of the programme to other schools and ensure that every category of students benefit from it.

The pilot project spread across both

public and private secondary schools in the state with the following schools being the beneficiaries:

I. Saint Louis Secondary School, Akure;

II. Springtide College, Igbatoro;

III. Anglican Grammar School, Igbara-Oke;
