Rainfall causes flash flooding in Ondo communities, Government sympathizes with Osemawe*
The rainfall that lasted for hours yesterday in some parts of the state has reportedly caused flash flooding, especially in some communities in Ondo City, the headquarters of Ondo West Local Government Areas.
According to reports, the flood affected property worth several millions of Naira and over flooded major roads, causing gridlock of vehicles for several hours.
It took the interventions of some security agents to rescue some children from being swept away by the flood at Itan'la (Ile-Oluji) junction, Ondo.
Reacting to the incident, Commissioner for Environment, Mr Oyeniyi Oseni, expressed the sympathy of the Ondo State Government to the Osemawe of Ondo and the people of the entire community.
He said the state government was aware of the prediction of possible flood in some communities in the state by NIMET and has put necessary machinery in place to avert it.
According to a Release by the Head, Media & Information Unit of the ministry, Mr Festus Adeusi, the State Government had earlier deployed Amphibious Excavator to erosion-prone areas in the community to dredg of waterways to avoid flooding in response to the NIMET alert.
According to him, the Commissioner sympathized with the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, Oba Victory Kiladejo, described flood as a natural disaster, saying government is working round the clock to put in place measures to avert future occurrence.
He said this informed the deployment of an amphibious excavator to identified flood prone areas in communities in Ondo West by the State Government, adding that the excavator has been working in Laje, community for the past two weeks.
According to the Commissioner, the excavator had earlier carried out dredging activities at Oke- Odunwo and other areas identified as erosion-prone in Ondo communities, and had also carried out similar activities in Akure, Igbokoda, and Ore.
Mr Oseni attributed the remote cause of the flash flooding to the blocked drainage along Captain Cook and Sawmill areas, and informed that the state government has already deployed an excavator to commence work in the area immediately.
While promising that the excavator would continue to work in the community until all canals and waterways are cleared, the Commissioner however cautioned against building houses or shops on waterways or engaging in activities capable of disrupting erosion courses.
