ONDO COMMISSIONER ADVOCATES MEASURES TO CURB DRUG ABUSE AMONG YOUTHS*

 



The Ondo State Government will consider the introduction of Drug Integrity Test as basic condition for admission of students into its tertiary institutions across the state as a measure to check drug abuse among the youths.




The state government will also work with relevance authorities and agencies towards introducing Anti Narcotics Studies into secondary and primary school curriculum in the state.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Olaolu Akindolire, stated this while playing host to the Ondo State Commandant of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Comdr. Nanzing Sallah in Akure.

Mr. Akindolire said if every student seeking admission into tertiary institutions are made to pass the Drug Integrity Test, the incidence of violent crimes and cultism will reduce considerably  among under- graduates in campuses across the country.

The Commissioner decried the spate of misuse of drugs and narcotics among the youths, saying they now hide under its influence to either commit crimes or as source of escape from what they ought to do.

He said the state government is determined to make the state free of drug abuse by ensuring that adequate sensitization on the negative impacts of hard drugs  are taken to the young ones in their early stages.

"We are going to achieve this through the formation of hard drugs awareness clubs in our schools, the introduction of Essay and quiz competition on hard drugs, and the re-enactment of war against drug abuse, among others"

Mr Akindolire while thanking the NDLEA for its efforts at ridding the society off hard drugs, also enjoined Nigerian youths to shun hard drugs and misuse of narcotics, but channel their energies towards productive ventures that would benefit them and the society.

The Ondo State Commandant of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Comdt. Nanzing Sallah said the agency, apart from working towards ridding the society off hard drugs, also provide counselling as well as rehabilitation of drug abuse victims.

Comdt. Sallah who identified some flash points for hempt cultivation in the state, hinted that the agency is presently working towards evolving alternative development for cultivation of the prohibited weed in the state.

Highlight of the visit was the decoration of the Commissioner, Mr  Olaolu Akindolire, as 'Drug-Free Ambassador' by the Ondo State Commandant of NDLEA, Comdt. Nanzing Sallah.
