ODSG collaborates with UNIDO to facilitate Circular Economy Project on Renewable energy.*

 


The Ondo State Government is collaborating with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization UNIDO, to embark on the assessment of off-grid renewable energy and small hydropower projects in the State.

The move was part of its efforts by the state government to facilitate economic growth and ensure safe and clean environment for the people of the state.

Declaring open a two day workshop on Safe Environment, Commissioner for  Environment, Oyeniyi Oseni, stated that Ondo State has been selected as one of the beneficiaries of the circular economy and hydropower projects of the Organization in the country.

The move, according to him followed a request by the state government to be a beneficiary of the project to drive its vision of providing sustainable energy in a safe environment to enhance the economic prosperity of the state.

He added that to achieve this, the ministry of environment in partnership with UNIDO, would explore the primary resources which include renewable energy, e-waste and used batteries to avoid waste.

A statement by the Head, Information Unit of the ministry of Environment, Mr Raymond Adeusi, quoted Mr Oyeniyi as saying that the project would involve the Ministries of Environment, Energy and Mineral Resources, Waste Management Agency, OSEPA, and other Critical Stakeholders.

"The project falls in line perfectly with our vision for a cleaner and more prosperous state and we must all commit ourselves to ensure the success of this Project in the State," he said"

The Commissioner  thanked UNIDO for extending the laudable project to the Ondo State, noting that it would promoting resource efficiency, waste reduction, and economic empowerment.

Speaking at the event, the UNIDO National Project Coordinator on Environment and Energy, Mr. Oluwayomi Banjo, appreciated the Ondo State Governor, Lucky Ayedatiwa for his giant development strides in the State.

According to him, Governor  Lucky Ayedatiwa has demonstrated a strong political will and determination to develop the state and the people.

Mr Oluwayomi posited that Ondo State was selected as one of the five core benefiting states for the project based on competency and not on geopolitical consideration.

Others benefiting states are, Abia, Anambra, Kaduna, and Ogun State.

The UNIDO project coordinator stated that the organization was a specialized Agency of the United Nations and would continue to show its commitment to the development of Ondo, and other states of the country.

UNIDO, as a specialized agency is saddled with the mandate to promote industrialization and economic transition in developing countries.

The project " Advancing Nigeria's Green and Just Transition to Net-Zero through Circular Economy Practices' is a National Project in cooperation with the European Union and would run for three years with special focus on how to address waste and solar issues in the state.
