Ondo State Flags Off Distribution of Teaching and Learning Materials to Public Basic Schools
The Ondo State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to strengthening the education sector with the official flag-off of the distribution of teaching and learning materials to basic education schools across the state.
The ceremony, held at St. James Mega Primary School, Irowo, Akure, was performed by the Governor of Ondo State, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the quality, accessibility, and overall standard of education.
The exercise marked a major milestone in the government’s sustained efforts to strengthen the foundation of basic education across the 18 Local Government Areas of Ondo State.
Speaking at the occasion, Governor Aiyedatiwa, who was presented by the Commissioner for Education Science and Technology, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, described the initiative as a significant step in his administration’s drive to reposition the education sector for excellence, inclusiveness, and global relevance.
He emphasized that education remains the most reliable instrument for sustainable development and societal advancement, noting that providing adequate instructional materials is critical to improving teaching effectiveness and enhancing pupils’ academic performance.
The Governor explained that the intervention, implemented in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), reflects the state government’s deliberate investment in human capital development.
Governor Aiyedatiwa disclosed that the state government recently recruited about 2,500 qualified teachers across primary and secondary schools to address staffing shortages.
He said the recruitment has strengthened classroom engagement, improved teacher-pupil ratios, and enhanced the quality of learning in public schools.
He further stated that his administration has prioritized continuous training and retraining of teachers through structured capacity-building programmes, digital literacy initiatives, and subject-based refresher courses.
According to him, these programmes are designed to equip teachers with modern teaching methods and improve service delivery in line with global best practices.
The Governor also revealed that Ondo State has consistently accessed UBEC/SUBEB intervention funds up to 2025, which have been utilized for the renovation of classrooms, construction of new school buildings, provision of furniture, improvement of sanitation facilities, and expansion of digital learning infrastructure across the state.
He added that the distribution of textbooks and other instructional materials will reduce the financial burden on parents while ensuring that pupils have access to the tools necessary for effective learning.
Governor Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that every child in Ondo State has access to inclusive, equitable, and quality education.
The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Aisha Garba, commended the Ondo State Government and the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) for their strategic and timely intervention in strengthening basic education.
Represented by the Director of Social Mobilisation, UBEC, Abuja, Malam Adamu Gurama, Dr Garba noted that the distribution of teaching and learning materials represents a practical demonstration of collaboration between the Federal and State Governments in advancing basic education.
Dr. Garba emphasized that sustainable progress in the education sector requires accountability, effective mentoring, and sustained collaboration among stakeholders.
She stressed the importance of ensuring that all distributed materials reach the intended schools and are properly utilized to improve teaching quality and pupils’ academic achievement.

He stated that the distribution exercise reflects the government’s priority to strengthen teaching and learning conditions in public primary and junior secondary schools.
Rt. Hon. Olabimtan disclosed that the materials, procured through the 2024 UBEC Intervention Fund and other partnerships, include 62,973 English Studies textbooks, 45,555 Mathematics textbooks, 10,345 Knowledge English Studies books for ECCDE, 12,012 Knowledge Mathematics books for ECCDE, and 87 cartons of assorted textbooks, in addition to school bags, exercise books, pencils, and school sandals.
